When you think about businesses in Calgary that are making a difference in poverty reduction, you might not think of a dog and pet training business. But one business is doing just that.
Dogma Training & Pet Services Inc. consists of two canine behaviour and education centres that focus on improving the lives of dogs and the people who love them. They also help to develop the dog trainers of tomorrow through dogma Academy. Dogma has set the standard for care and training through strict capacity limits, the lowest staff to dog ratios, the highest level of team training and more. They provide unique training programs through group classes, day school and private training to fit any schedule and budget.
Vibrant Communities Calgary was first introduced to Dogma when they applied for REAP’s Empowering Employees Leader Award.
REAP stands for Respect for the Earth and All People. REAP is a not-for-profit association for locally owned businesses that care about the community and the environment.
REAP’s Annual Be Local Awards program is delivered in partnership with First Calgary Financial and recognizes excellence in our local economy by sharing the stories of the incredible work many companies and organizations are doing to support people and planet. Each year six leadership awards are presented.
The Empowering Employees Leader Award is presented by Vibrant Communities Calgary to a REAP member that is affecting meaningful and sustainable progress towards reducing poverty through employee-centered practices that build resilience. These may include but are not limited to paying a living wage, providing additional forms of compensation, financial literacy and employee wellness programs.
The decision to select an award recipient was no easy task and although Dogma was not the award-winning recipient in 2018, they stand out in a very big way.
At Dogma, when you join the team, you become part of the family. They are a team that believes they will accomplish more when working together and understanding that a group of passionate individuals can change the world.
“We are driven every day to ensure each individual dog in our care is being provided with the best care and training possible, we aim to increase our knowledge through learning and continuing education, we support and work with the best team around and provide superior customer care to our clients. And we have fun while doing it!”
By paying a Living Wage, Dogma has managed to increase their standards by being the only day school to have all team be certified dog trainers and provide full-time salaried work to dog trainers and have been able to improve their employee experience.
